The music and production design was perfect and we wanted to capture every moment faithfully as it was in the 1970’s.

It’s not every day you get to go back in time and experience a show that shaped so much culture, music and the future television all wrapped into one.

and when you combine the action packed drama of the story of Don Cornelius played by the dynamic Sinqua Walls and his pathway to making the most iconic music TV show in American history. This TV drams follows the twists and turns of Don Cornelius’s life as he birthed what can be arguable seen as the most influential music show in the history of television.

In fact when we received a lot of the music pre record playback tracks from iconic producer Baby Face and his team engineer Paul Boutin and music supervisor Ashley Neumeister it was hard to know whether we we’re listening to the original or a cover and to make things even more special all of the performances on stage we’re actually performed and pre recorded by the actual artists who we’re cast for that role.

Immediately out of the gate planning on using pre records for most of the music in the show we started hearing and witnessing these in the moment opportunities were the performers would ad lib in between lyrics and also sometimes we’d get additional harmonies from background vocalists. So it was imperative to my team that we capture everything giving post the ultimate flexibility to blend those tracks how they see fit with the pre record.

In addition to providing both mono music playback, and TC aux to the production recorder we would also capture practical feeds from all the stage mics. So the track counts once you added the fast paced interwoven dialogue as the steadicam bounced around the stages created high track counts often exceeding sixteen ISO’s which required both technical planning and in the moment improvisation from both the stage and on the floor.. Thanks to the shows prop master Katrina Rice most of the mic’s we sourced we’re all working models used on the show further enhancing the classic sound from that era creating the perfect 1970’s landscape of what can be seen as the most influential and iconic music show of all time.
